I’m starting to feel like a good general de-cluttering is in order. Lately, I’ve been thinking it’s time to get a little more organization going around the house.
With all dreams of Spring cleaning dancing in my head, I got to thinking about couple of projects I’d done for one of my best friends.Like a console table redo and tips for a quick bookcase restyle.
One Saturday afternoon, my friend was telling me about her table. She didn’t like it at all anymore but she’d paid a pretty penny (I think it was from Pottery Barn awhile back) and she felt bad getting rid of it. Plus, she said she wanted to find a ‘replacement’ first. So doing what I do, I promptly showed up with my rolling bag of tricks to get a little paint party going.
We carried the table out to her garage and covered the bottom with some old newspaper.
I got my handy-dandy power sander out and roughed it up a bit.
When it was nice and smooth and most of the old poly was all gone, I vacuumed all the dust off with my trusty Dirt Devil. I wiped it down with a microfiber cloth to catch any of the excess and gave her a quick spray of primer.
During all this, we were talking about what color/s she likes to use in her house. She wanted something fun but not too crazy for her table. And she really likes green and sometimes orange too; but not necessarily together. So, we decided on a lovely mossy green that I had in my stash, I put on a light coat of that and distressed it a bit before finishing it off with a hand waxing.
And, there you have it.
A console table redo. (Not the best pic-from my old phone. I wish I had a better one) But she was really happy and so was I.
While I painted, my friend (who I consider highly organized and creative) was busy cleaning out what had been on her console table. She was going through those piles of papers we all have coming into our house when I said to her,
“Hey, why don’t we go ahead and revamp your awesome built-in bookcase?!”
“No, no. Some other day… maybe. That’s too big of a project for today”, she replied.
And that’s when I told her to just “go shop around your house”. So she went to look for anything she could find in green and orange, while I cleared out all the old DVDs, candles and whatnot from the bookcase. She was back 10 minutes later. I asked her to sit down and just hand me the things she liked best. I put all her favorites onto the shelves that the electronics weren’t on and then I filled in with bits of color to balance it all out.
And, here’s her newly restyled bookcase.
(Sorry I was so caught up in the fun I forgot a before pic. boo!)
We’d decided to keep it simple. The whole less is more thing.
She was super happy with the results and I think it’s a great way to spend time with a friend.
Here’s the tip: just jump in;don’t think about it.
And, invite a friend over for a glass of wine to help. Somehow when it’s not your own stuff it’s so much easier to decide on where to put things. Really try to pair down your contents and only use half of what you had up there before.
So, do you have any shelves that you could use restyling? Or maybe you have a piece of furniture you’d like to change? Tell me about it. I’ve love to hear.
And, don’t forget: call your friend for a little DIY get-together …soon 😉
